Helen Metro Obituary

Helen C. Metro was born on May 4, 1928, in McKees Rocks, and died peacefully surrounded by her daughters on December 24, 2023, at the age of 95.

Helen was a loving wife, mother, nana, and homemaker. She was a beloved and supportive neighbor, friend, and aunt, and a devoted Catholic who had a strong faith.

She was a graduate of Stowe High School and spent her high school years cheerleading. She loved being a cheerleader, and often reminisced about those days. After her children were grown, she worked for 25 years as a crew member at the Wendy’s in Kennedy Township. She retired at 81 years old.

Her determination was palpable, and she lived life on her own terms. She was witty, giving, fun, always laughing and making others laugh, a good listener, quick to give advice, and unfailingly had an open door for anyone who needed it.

Helen was known for hosting beautiful celebrations and parties for her loved ones, volunteering at St. Malachy Church, and her love of shopping anytime, anywhere. In her younger years, she would spend all day shopping in downtown Pittsburgh, and as she aged, they became hours-long trips to the Dollar Store with her daughters Kathy and Helen Sue. She loved to dress-up and put on her favorite lipstick. A fellow neighbor often said, “Here comes Ms. Hollywood!” when she saw Helen because she was always dressed to the nines.

Her daughters remember a home filled with love, how their mom made vacations special, her incredible cooking and baking skills, and Helen listening to the radio so she could hear Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. She would dance the Jitterbug with her husband, Stephen, as often as she could.

She loved to watch her grandchildren Trick or Treat around her neighborhood and wore a festive outfit for the occasion. She had a bowl of candy sitting out in her living room and passed down her sweet tooth to her children and grandchildren. Out of all her favorite sweets, yellow-batter cake took the win. It was her absolute favorite, and she had one for any occasion (or no occasion at all- other than that she wanted cake!)

Helen had many hobbies and shared them with others. She loved movies and preferred them over TV shows. She would always tell her daughters “I watched a movie last night. It was so good. Do you know it? Can you find it?”, and they would search the plot online to find it for her. She also created amazing flower arrangements and was competitive when it came to bingo and the lottery. While playing games, she would remind everyone that she’s “not playing this game to lose!”

Even if some of the toughest moments in her life, Helen sought out and found joy in her every day. She wanted others to do the same.

She has been reunited with her husband, Stephen J. Metro; her son, Stephen A. Metro; her parents, Dominic and Helen (Istenes) Porco; and her sister, Dolores Prescott. She is survived by her daughters, Karen (Leonard) Smart, Kathleen (Donald) Edmunds, and Helen Sue Butera; and her grandchildren, Lani Smart, Jason Smart, Vincent Butera, Jacob Edmunds, and Elissa (Tyler) Edmunds-Hunt.
